Stories

Postcards from
people who went.

A koala peering through eucalyptus leaves

"The koala looked at me like I was the attraction."

Three days on Kangaroo Island, where the wildlife has right of way and the locals measure distance in wineries.

The Twelve Apostles sea stacks at golden hour

243 km of cliff-edge theatre: driving the Great Ocean Road slowly.

Everyone does it in a day. We took four, and found the shipwrecks, rainforests and bakeries the day-trippers miss.

The beehive domes of the Bungle Bungle Range, Purnululu

The Kimberley: Australia's last grand frontier earns the name.

One million visitors a year go to Sydney. About 40,000 make it here. The Bungle Bungles alone are worth the red dust in your boots.

Practical planning

The boring bit,
handled.

two minutes, tops — we checked ✓

Visas & entry

Most visitors need an Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601) — apply via the AustralianETA app; most approvals land within minutes and cost about A$20 in service fees. UK and some European passport holders use the free eVisitor (subclass 651). Passports should be valid for your whole stay. Australia is strict on biosecurity: declare food, plant material and muddy boots.

Getting there & around

Direct flights reach Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth from ~20 global hubs; from London or Dallas it's about 17 hours nonstop. Inside Australia, think like an Australian: fly between regions (Sydney–Cairns is 3 hrs; Melbourne–Uluru 3 hrs), then drive within them. Iconic self-drives: Great Ocean Road (243 km), Sydney–Brisbane coast (900 km), the Red Centre loop from Alice Springs (1,135 km).

Weather & packing

Seasons are flipped: Christmas is beach weather, July is ski season in the Snowys. The tropical north (reef, Darwin, Kimberley) has two seasons — dry (May–Oct): go; wet (Nov–Apr): hot, humid, some closures. The south (Sydney, Melbourne, Tasmania) shines Oct–Apr. Pack layers, SPF 50+, a hat you'll actually wear, and swim between the flags. Always.

Money, safety & etiquette

Australian dollars; cards and tap-to-pay everywhere, even outback roadhouses. No tipping culture — service staff earn real wages. Emergency number is 000. Sun and surf are the real hazards: slip-slop-slap, and swim at patrolled beaches. On First Nations land, follow signage, ask before photographing people, and never climb Uluru — it's been closed to climbing since 2019, out of respect.

see you at
